Something I've seen a couple people saying is that they want to make sure that Laudna understands that she's not the only one who has been through trauma. But like. Laudna is not the only one who needs to learn that lesson. Actually, it's not even that Laudna needs to learn that she's not the only one that's been through trauma at all, because they're all very aware of what they've all been through. This became an inevitable confrontation when Laudna decided to let Delilah back in, though, and after rewatching the scene, I actually think the only people who managed this situation correctly were Imogen* and Ashton.

Orym and Laudna are both more focused on their own pasts with the sword and not thinking about each other. Orym should have talked to the group and come to a decision with them about using the sword and Laudna should have talked to him about it instead of trying to steal it.

Cutting through the fabric of the Dream Realm was a far more difficult task when one could not use their Dream Nail. Fortunately, however, dreams were not so different from nightmares, and once given enough time to better harness their growing power, Friend Grimmchild had been able to rescue Ghost from their accidentally-made prison. The escape also brought about a bittersweet parting, though; rather than follow Ghost back into the waking realm, the young nightmare god had decided that it was time to part ways and seek out the Troupe they had inherited from their father. Thus, when Ghost crossed between the two realms, they did so alone.

Upon returning to the physical world, Ghost had once again found themself within the interior of the Black Egg Temple. They weren't quite sure how long they had been trapped in the other realm, but considering the chamber's emptiness (Sister Hornet had already left, it seemed, but at least that likely meant she was okay), they could guess that a decent amount of time had already passed.

They had sacrificed much in order to defeat the forgotten light, the greatest of which being the shell that had contained the Void within their body up until now. In the past, such a thing would have spelled certain death, but their Heart of Void allowed them the control to manifest themself in their true form, without the need for their old vessel. …Though it was certainly still an inconvenience to be without it, they did have to admit.

Their first thought upon returning to Hallownest had been to visit Dirtmouth. The town was only a short walk away from the temple, after all, and was home to many of the bugs they considered friends. They were looking forward to seeing everyone again! That was the reason they'd wanted to come back, after all.

Unfortunately, however, it seemed that the townsfolk did not recognize them in their new form. Friend Elderbug, who had previously been so kind to them on their journey, cried out in terror upon seeing them, clutching his delicate flower close to his chest as if hoping it would protect him. Zote had lept toward them, pointing his useless 'Life Ender' at them and raving about slaying them like the mighty knight he supposedly was. ...Actually, perhaps Zote had not been any different from usual.

Regardless, that was why they now found themself wandering the winding tunnels of Deepnest. During their travels, they vaguely recalled encountering a Mask Maker who resided somewhere within the caverns. With any luck, that person would be able to craft a new vessel for them to channel their Void into, allowing them to once again take on their old appearance! Then they would be able to return to their friends, and all would be well.

The problem with that plan, though, was that Ghost could not remember exactly where the Mask Maker dwelled. They knew they were somewhere in Deepnest, but the region was one of the largest in the kingdom, and was full of twisting paths that made it incredibly easy to get lost. It also didn't help that they had no access to any of their maps at the moment. Yet another consequence of being in this Shade-like form.

At least with the Infection gone, Deepnest was a much safer place to be in. Of course, that wasn't to say it was harmless, nor anything of the sort. Surviving, hungry Dirtcarvers still lunged at them whenever they passed over where the creatures lay burrowed underground, and the parasitic Corpse Creepers took full advantage of the dead husks that had previously been infected. Still, compared to the other times they had ventured through the area, when the Infection was still rampant, the amount of times they were attacked by vicious creatures had certainly lessened this time around.

Sometime in the midst of their wandering, Ghost overheard footsteps that were unlike the usual scuttling of Deepnest's denizens. They turned around to face the source of the noise, only to come face-to-face with... Themself?

It was another Vessel. A sibling. Another who had managed to survive the Abyss and persist through the Infection. Through their Void Heart, Ghost could feel the flow of Void that composed the other, just as it did themself. They may be in Deepnest, but this was certainly no Nosk.

Yet, it was strange. This Vessel's shell looked identical to their discarded one, save for the large cracks running down the centre of it. Not only that, but within the Void they could detect an additional power thrumming through the other. Something similar, perhaps related, but different from any other Void creature they had encountered before. Something more. They weren't sure what it was, or why this particular sibling of theirs was unique in having it.

One curiosity could only be investigated at a time, however. And one question was easier to ask than others, as someone with no mouth nor voice to speak with.

So, as the other Vessel stepped toward them, Ghost lifted one of their primary tendrils to point at them. First they gestured to the other's mask, and then pointed at their own head. They then repeated the movements a couple more times, as if to ask, “Why do you have my face?”

Ever since the defeat of that Old Light, the state of Hallownest has been… calm. Some strong creatures still roam the kingdom, but the level of danger is nothing compared to back when the Infection was running rampant. Thus far none of the new travelers passing through have caused issues, so things were overall uneventful.

So when rumors of a phantom reached them, Ghost's curiosity was immediately piqued. The people of Dirtmouth had seen something strange. As described by Elderbug, it was a "ghastly shadow." Frightening in the eyes of the townsfolk, apparently.

Seeing as they had nothing better to do, the little knight decided to venture into the kingdom, to find this so-called phantom. Is it a threat that needs to be removed? It would be unfortunate if their friends were harmed by it…

They carefully scoured Hallownest's regions as best they could, gradually working their way towards its depths. Nothing out of the ordinary had caught their attention yet, but they had a few ideas as to where something deemed "frightening" could have come from…

That train of thought eventually lead them into Deepnest. They crept onward through the vicious region, Pure Nail at the ready… Finally, something unusual came into view.

Before their eyes, hovering above the path, was a living blot of darkness. A head that was shaped much like their own, eyes that glowed a bright white, and a "cloak" of shadowy tendrils… It definitely could fit the bill of what Dirtmouth's residents saw.

A Shade. Why would one be in Deepnest -- or have gone to Dirtmouth, for that matter? The Abyss may be open now, but their siblings had mostly seemed content to rest there…

In any case, they doubt the other is a threat to them. Sheathing their nail, Ghost would curiously approach what they assumed to be a Sibling. What are they doing here…?

What is going on with cutting posts?

You may have seen some posts floating around lately about the beta editor and trimming reblogs, and possibly found yourself extremely confused trying to figure out what this tangled web of editors, extensions, and add-ons even means. I’ve been on this site for years, and I still find the whole thing terribly confusing.

So this post is my effort to explain everything -- legacy vs beta, New XKit vs XKit Rewritten, editable reblogs vs trim reblogs -- everything. This also doubles as a tutorial for the various methods of cutting posts.

TL;DR

Tumblr is in the process of switching to a new post editor that some old users have opted into, while new users have been forced into it.

The old Editable Reblogs extension does not work with this new editor, requiring people to use a new extension called Trim Reblogs.

Trim Reblogs and Editable Reblogs are not compatible. If your partner uses Editable Reblogs, you cannot cut their posts properly using Trim Reblogs (unless you’re willing to do some tedious and frankly unreasonable workarounds).

The only way for everyone in the RPC to cut their posts properly and efficiently is if everyone moves to the new system and uses Trim Reblogs. Clinging to the old system with Editable Reblogs is actively creating issues for the people using the new system -- some of whom do not have a choice.

Cutting Posts

Cutting posts is the act of removing older replies on a thread when reblogging it. This goes by several other terms, including trimming replies/reblogs or any variation of that wording, but I will be referring to it as cutting posts to avoid confusion with the Trim Reblogs extension, which will be coming up a lot.

Typically, when cutting a post, you only keep your latest reply and the reply from your partner that immediately precedes it. This means that instead of a thread looking like this...

It would like this:

Or like this, depending on the method used:

In either case, the first post is gone while the second and third post remain.

Cutting posts is done so that threads aren’t all extremely long on the dashboard. When there’s three short replies like this sample, it’s not that bad. But imagine a thread with twenty replies where each is several paragraphs long. That would require people to scroll and scroll and scroll to get past it. And since the same thread would be reblogged multiple times, your dash might become the same posts, over and over and over again, with only one new addition at the end each time.

Cutting posts is extremely common Tumblr RP etiquette. Many people won’t follow you if you don’t regularly cut replies, due to how irritating the alternative is.

Copy and Paste (Outdated)

Once upon a time, you used to be able to cut replies without any kind of extensions. Unfortunately, those days are gone.

That method worked as follows. You would go to reblog as usual...

Copy and paste the last reply, putting it in a blockquote (or using any other formatting you like, really), then add your own reply underneath.

Then you can simply hover over the older replies and click the red X in order to remove them.

And this used to work. But now, the very first post in a thread cannot be deleted -- only later reblogs can. This means that the first post will always stay above the others, no matter how far along in the thread you are.

So since cutting posts can’t be done normally, we have to rely on browser extensions. This is where things get complicated. And also where I need to explain the different editors.

Legacy vs Beta Editor

Every time you make or reblog a post, you are using Tumblr’s post editor to do so. This is the area where you type up your post, add images, etc. Tumblr has been using the same editor for several years now, and it’s called the legacy editor.

However, Tumblr has been slowly rolling out a new text editor, called the beta editor. You may remember the beta editor when it was first rolled out a couple years ago as a buggy, unstable mess -- that’s not the case anymore, and it’s no more buggy than the current editor. For text posts, it’s functionally pretty similar, and even has a few features that some of you might want, such as easy colored text and the ability to make posts non-rebloggable. (Photo and other posts are fairly different, and I know gif makers have some pretty understandable reservations and complaints about it, but I won’t be covering that here.)

Older users have the option to toggle between the legacy and beta editors at will, while new users (starting around November/December 2022) are locked into the beta editor and cannot switch back to legacy.

To check which editor you have, go to make a new text post and look in the top right corner.

If you see either of these:

You are using the legacy editor, with the option to switch between the two.

If you see this:

You are using the beta editor, with the option to switch between the two.

If you don’t see anything at all, you are using the beta editor, and cannot switch.

While the text interface of the two editors isn’t terribly different for roleplay purposes, the methods by which you need to trim reblogs are entirely different. Each requires a different extension -- specifically, a different version of XKit.

XKit

XKit is a browser extension designed to add features and functionality to Tumblr. It includes many quality of life features such as a mutual checker, better tag tracking, queue improvements, ad blocking, more detailed timestamps, and so much more. (It was preceded by a similar extension called Missing E, if you’ve been here long enough to remember that.) And among all of these many features is the ability to cut replies.

The original XKit is no longer in use, having stopped updates in 2015 and being entirely unusable now. However, a few new versions of XKit have popped up throughout the years.

New XKit & Editable Reblogs

A different team created New XKit as a successor to the original, a similar extension designed to restore many of the same features.

New XKit’s feature to cut posts is called Editable Reblogs. It works by adding a pencil button to the left of the post when you reblog.

Clicking that button will break the post’s formatting -- actually changing it to how Tumblr posts used to be formatted -- but allow it to be edited however you wish.

So in this instance, I could simply select the first reply and delete it before adding my new reply underneath.

Editable Reblogs is only available if you use the legacy editor. It does not work with the beta editor and does not even appear as an option.

XKit Rewritten & Trim Reblogs

In 2020, Tumblr began to roll out its updated dashboard, which is now permanently in effect for all users. While the new interface looks very similar, the code was actually entirely redone, and behind the scenes functions very differently from the older dashboard. As a result, some of New XKit’s features no longer work as intended -- though a few still do, such as Editable Reblogs.

In response, the New XKit team decided to similarly start from scratch and created XKit Rewritten, another iteration of the add-on with similar features once more. However, not all New XKit features are available on XKit Rewritten, and vice versa. Many people are running both extensions simultaneously to take advantage of features on both.

XKit Rewritten’s feature to cut posts is called Trim Reblogs, and it works completely differently than Editable Reblogs. With this, you first need to save the thread to your drafts with your reply already written.

You’ll see a scissors icon appear along the bottom of the post. Clicking that will open the trimming options, letting you select which previous reblogs to delete.

Clicking Trim will remove the selected reblogs.

You can then click post. You’ll note that this method preserves Tumblr’s formatting, as opposed to Editable Reblogs, which breaks it.

EDITED TO ADD: Apparently you don’t need to already have your reply written in your drafts anymore. You can save the post to your drafts without adding anything, use trim reblogs, then edit the post to add your reply. Either works fine.

This method does have two major issues, though. First, if the first post of a thread was created in the legacy editor, then the system gets really buggy and just doesn’t work.

This is what happened when I tried it out. Initially, it seemed to work as expected.

However, when I posted the reply, or simply refreshed my drafts, this happened.

Attempting to trim again simply caused this to repeat. There is no fix for this. This means that for this method to work, both you and your partners need to be using the beta editor.

EDITED TO ADD: You can fix this double posting by either using trim reblogs before adding your reply, or by adding your reply, using trim reblogs as intended, refreshing your drafts, editing the post, and clicking the red X to remove the first of the double postings. I have a better guide here.

The only other alternative is to move the thread to a fresh post when you reply, so that the new first post was made with the beta editor. Then you can cut future reblogs of the post using Trim Reblogs as normal.

However, the other major issue is that if your partner uses Editable Reblogs, you cannot use Trim Reblogs as intended. Let me show you why.

Say I want to reply to this post.

I’ll add my reply and save it to my drafts, as before.

You may have spotted the issue already. The first and second replies are now “combined” so that Tumblr sees them as a single post. We want the post to be interpreted like this, so that I can remove the oldest reply while still keeping the one immediately prior to mine.

But Trim Reblogs can only see it like this.

When I go to trim reblogs, I can only remove the previous replies as an entire unit. I can’t remove just the oldest reply and keep the one immediately prior -- either it all stays or it all goes.

This is admittedly better than nothing. However, most people do want to keep their partner’s previous reply for reference, and just to have on their blog. This means a lot of people using Trim Reblogs simply don’t cut their partner’s posts at all.

You might be able to get around this issue by combining it with the outdated cut and paste method I described above. When saving to your drafts, paste your partner’s last reply above your own, using a blockquote or whatever formatting you like to separate the two.

You can then use Trim Reblogs to remove the first post, leaving only your copy pasted reply. The formatting is broken, but it’s at least workable.

However, this will only work if the very first post of the thread was made with the beta editor -- since people using Editable Reblogs have to be using the legacy editor, you’re likely to still run into issues on a lot of posts. Which can again be solved by moving the thread to a fresh post made with the beta editor, but at this point we’re stacking so many issues on top of each other that I really can’t blame you if you just don’t want to bother with any of them.

All of this brings me to...

It’s time for the RPC to collectively switch to the new system

I’ve stuck to the legacy editor myself due to the issues described above -- using Trim Reblogs when everyone else still uses Editable Reblogs is an enormous pain that I don’t want to deal with. Even as I make this post advocating for people to switch, I’m dreading actually doing it, because I know that most of my partners still use the old system and I will have nothing but headaches.

But the thing is, everyone refusing to switch is what’s creating the headaches in the first place. If we all moved to the new system together, these issues would simply disappear, and we would all be able to effortlessly cut our posts using Trim Reblogs without ever having to worry about it again.

The RPC needs to collectively make the switch, for two reasons.

First, Tumblr is going to switch everyone to beta eventually. Refusing to switch now is really just delaying the inevitable -- it’s not a question of if you’re going to be forced into the new system, but when. By switching now, you can go ahead and get used to it and start giving feedback to both Tumblr and the XKit Rewritten team if you find anything buggy or broken.

Second, as I said above, new users are locked into beta, with no option to switch back to legacy. Trim Reblogs is their only option for cutting posts -- and as long as most of their partners are using Editable Reblogs instead, they cannot cut their posts properly. Their only option is to use a series of increasingly ridiculous workarounds that most people won’t understand. The fact that it took me 1500 words just to explain everything should tell you how confusing the whole thing is -- you can’t be that surprised when a lot of people, upon realizing that they can’t cut posts without a whole lot of tedium, decide to just not bother cutting them at all. The best way for everyone to be able to cut their posts properly and efficiently is for everyone to be on the same system.

Yes, the beta editor is different. It has some weird quirks. It will be a bit of a learning curve to get used to a new system of replying to threads. But this is a change that’s going to happen eventually, and is a change that needs to happen for a lot of people to able to cut their posts properly.

(It’s also worth noting that -- assuming you still have the option to switch -- you may be able to toggle between the two systems during the adjustment period. I haven’t been able to test this yet, but I see no reason it wouldn’t work. Use Trim Reblogs whenever possible, and especially for the partners that have already made the switch. But when you get to a reply that it just won’t work for, toggle back to the legacy editor and use Editable Reblogs just for that thread. It’s a bit annoying, but it could be the middle ground needed to help people start making the switch. And once the majority of the RPC is on the new system, then this won’t be an issue anymore.)

(ooc: this is basically a me camp half-blood version to interact with other rp blogs and the fandom beyond my other rp blog @flipflops-n-bones whose character is a toddler as of now.)

I'm 15, usually - when my brain glitches or when I want, it can be anywhere from toddler to teen (ooc: IRL I'm a young adult as far as ID goes!).

I'm nonbinary, aro-ace or something? Generally some kind of confused queer. I use they/them or she/her as pronouns, default is they.

Uhm. I look like the little picture I put - on the smaller side, dark curls, blue eyes, headphones and hoodie.

I like: stories, books, music, stars, rainbows, owls, cats, hugs, hot chocolate, helping people understand things, windy days at the lake... in general I'm more of a quiet and cozy person, but with my friends I can be quite silly!

I don't like: loud noises, spiders, darkness, pain, social issues, thunderstorms and crowds.

I read a lot, and listen to music, and I like doing crafts like crochet, sewing, embroidery... Also I got some experience with medical stuff if you need any volunteers.

As far as weapons go I'm okay, I think? Learning Archery, and before coming here I was already learning some Karate and Kobudo (basically quarterstaff work) which is really fun!

My Godly Parent is Athena. At least an owl appeared over my head when I came here (before I passed out)... So I guess I'm good with thinking and concepts and like noticing stuff, and "putting the pieces together". At least when my brain cooperates.

Update: I can change into an owl and fly!! And with practice I'll be able to change just body parts into their owl versions (hearing, vision, claws, even beak i guess? - not wings though that's not how physics works). Athenas symbol or something.

And my age and bodily appearance can change based on mood / unconsciously or when I want it to, from like small child to teenager. We're not really sure why. If I find out, I'll tell you.

And since I got adopted by Jack I can change into a cat too!!

My mortal family... um. No. No thank you. No. I'll be here year-round, please. I miss my little siblings, but... let's say there's reasons I left.

I'm dealing with some issues body and brain wise - autism, disability, silly brain - but it's usually not too much of a problem. Like, i get dizzy and walking hurts so I'll sometimes use mobility aids like a cane, crutches or a wheelchair. And I'm confused sometimes and have a really bad memory, or talk weirdly, but yea. Just some chaos all around.

Ongoing Series - Thai

My Stand-In (Thai Fri iQIYI) ep 2 of 12 eps - I love love love Sol! Pink-haired baby idol blast from the past nursing a crush = absolute catnip for me. This is def my favorite Thai BL currently airing. And it’s probably because it has a sort of odd queer authenticity to both its gayness and its rep of the film industry. I mean, of course it’s sanitized into BL fantasy-landia, but there’s an underpinning of something real, for lack of a better word. Normally I prefer the fantasy of my dumb BL worldview, but in this one I’m kind of liking a little chew and grit.

All of which is to say: this is very fucked up messy gay, which normally I’m not wild about, but for some reason I’m really enjoying this version.

On the other side of the BL coin we have:

Wandee Godday (Sat YT) ep 1 of 12 - And I like it a lot. It’s fun and I’m enjoying it (possibly more than it deserves). I like how it’s a little absurdist. I like that it starts with a one night stand. I like all of the side characters. I love the asexual representation. Bonus LUBE! It’s a fun show. More FUN that GMMTV usually goes for.  

Two Worlds (Thurs iQIYI) ep 8 of 10 - The sketching in the cave scene was v sexy. And I’m enjoying this BL, but not for any other reason than MaxNat being MaxNatty all over my screen. 

1000 Years Old (Thurs iQIYI) ep 12fin - I don’t know what I feel about this one. Mostly just indifferent. It was meant to be the paranormal Thai BL pulp about vampires that we were all waiting for, and it ended up just being boring. Frankly, I'd rather be pissed off than bored. 6/10

Only Boo! (Sun YouTube) ep 4 of 12 - I truly love the naked lust on our side couple's pining friend's face. Usually only Japan get this thirsty.

Book is perfectly cast as Moo's older bro. They even look a bit alike but it might have been a mistake, because he’s so damn charismatic. Stole all the breath from the show for a bit.

hunted hybrids au rambles

this is an au me and @linkito made for our scarian RP, so just beware it’s focused solely on these two and it’s self-indulgent. CWs, i suppose, are themes of violence and dehumanisation of hybrids, and mention of self harm (feather plucking).

the basic premise is that hermitcraft’s code got attacked. think season 8 moon big and ground deteriorating underneath their feet, but it’s all more rapid and out of the blue. they don’t get a chance to investigate or prepare. it’s just. happening. so obviously, confusion and panic.

and then the hermits get scattered, to other worlds, seemingly indiscriminately and at random, as hermitcraft implodes. 

grian and scar end up in the same world, but it takes them about a week to realise. (a very horrible week, mind you.) their comms don’t work quite right here. 

now, where they’ve ended up is a very, very hybrid-hostile world. think rough people and black markets and criminal societies. think hunters and bloodhounds and phantom-dragons that screech through the night. think traps and watchtowers and rotting forests without a bird-chirp in them.

this world considers hybrids to be something to hunt. something to take apart and sell and gloat about. vexes are disliked and killed for sport, for  bragging rights. there’s no mercy in that. avians, though? avian wings are seen as a commodity, a decoration. something to make money out of and claim a different kind of prestige from. 

... did i mention this world is permadeath?

yeah.

so here we have these two hermits, and i think it’s important to note that the life games aren’t a thing in this universe. they never experienced a situation where they have to fight for their life. they find themselves here, stranded and alone, not knowing if their home even still exists or what happened to the others and if there’s anyone left out there who will be looking for them. 

maybe they try to look for help, used to friendly communities and little to no consequences.

maybe they get glares and smirks and weapons pulled on them.

maybe they realise the error they’ve made. maybe they realise that this is no place to seek help.

and then they run.

and all they can do is keep on running.

(the wood is rotten. the animals are scarce, next to none - have they even seen any? besides the wailing hounds? they can’t remember. the resources are hidden, stashed away in the communities they are desperate to get as much distance from as possible. the land is dark, and eerie, and unfamiliar. it’s late autumn, toppling into winter, air chilly and frosty, and they are so, so very underprepared.)

i think this is a good time to note that i chose violet-backed starling as the bird-base for grian in this au. because the wings are brilliant and bright and vibrant. they’re rare. expensive. very, very much wanted. (very hard to hide in a drab late-autumn.) 

scar and grian meet under dire circumstances: a hunter de-routed from going after scar by a call for backup, to a violet-winged avian—an information scar overhears—a trophy too precious to walk away from. this is the moment scar has the startling, horrifying realisation that grian is also trapped in this world. (he hears  him before he sees him, and he’d know that voice anywhere.) (he never heard him scream like this before—)

long story short, grian gets hurt, scar goes a little feral, and together they escape, to seek out shelter and supplies in a world that seems determined to strip everything away from them. it’s getting colder, and they have nowhere to go but deeper into the forest, hoping that they’ll eventually go far enough that the hunters will give up. (a feeble, impossible hope.) 

please think about them being so confused and destabilised over the realisation that they’re no longer alone. the complicated feeling of relief of having someone familiar and safe there, and the absolutely nauseating terror of having them there, because it means they’re stuck in this nightmare, too. the struggle to keep each other alive and sane through it. the way how something so normal and taken for granted gets turned upside down—and gentle touch now feels so unfamiliar. (oh how they need that softness, in a world that is only ever harsh and cruel.)

the (so far) two drawings i made for this au are:

1. them curled up into each other, wrapped up in a blanket, trying to keep warm and survive the night. please note that scar is pressed against grian’s back, protecting the part of him that now feels the most vulnerable. (grian’s wings are a huge target. a beacon beckoning the hunters closer.) grian used to sleep (on those rare moments when he actually allowed himself to stop and nap) with his wings pressed against hard, rough, cold edges, just to hide them. just to make them less visible, just to make himself a little less vulnerable. (his feathers are a mess.)

2. on that note. the second drawing touches on grian’s complicated feelings about his wings that come from all this trauma. because all those pretty feathers do is drag danger to them. because he used to love them and they used to be his pride and joy and they let him feel free, but he can’t even fly anymore (the sky is too open; there are too many airborne hunters and watchtowers). and it’s these damned feathers that cause him and, more importantly, scar to get hurt and have to run and run and run even when they feel like they can’t anymore. 

grian is so upset with his feathers. they feel like a curse. they feel like a burden. they feel like he’ll never not be terrified as long as he has them. he’s tired and in pain and cornered and desperate, and he wants them gone. and so what if he cries. what if he starts plucking them out, urgent, frustrated, panicked sharp yanks, and—

and scar is there, and he’s shushing him and telling him to stop. telling him that his wings are beautiful, and they’re his, and scar won’t let anyone else touch them, ever. it’s okay. it’s okay it’s okay it’s okay. (nothing is okay.)

Eddie wants to taste those lips, and he wants it with a fierceness so sudden it shocks him. “I’m, uh,” Buck stammers. “Last night. When you saw me and Tommy…we—we were on a date.” Everything inside Eddie goes still. If his heart is a kite, then this is the moment it plummets back to earth.

or, Buck tells Eddie some news. Eddie has a realization and breaks up with his girlfriend. Not necessarily in that order.

Chapter 2/4 now up on ao3

Eddie is happy for Buck. Obviously. It goes without saying that he’s happy for him.

And look, it’s not like it’s hard. Not when Buck’s been walking around like the LA sun shines specifically for him. He’s got this shimmering halo of excitement around him these days, and beneath that, a kind of deep relief. Like some of the heavy weight he’s dragged around with him his entire life has been lifted.

More than anyone Eddie’s ever known, Buck has spent his life searching for something. And finally, he’s found it.

Not Tommy—although Buck does get a particular blushing grin on his face whenever he talks about him. What Buck has found is something bigger than that. A truth about himself. An answer to a question he never knew to ask.

So yeah, Eddie’s happy for him. How could he not be? This whole year, when he hasn’t been worrying about Chris, he’s been worried about Buck and how he’s been dealing with the aftermath of the lightning strike.

He’s not worried anymore.

And as for Eddie’s own revelation…the realization that for him, all roads lead to Buck, well…

He’s not thinking about it. He’s doing everything in his power to act like nothing’s changed, to act the way the Eddie Diaz of two weeks ago would act. The Eddie Diaz whose brain hadn’t yet caught up to his heart on the matter of Evan Buckley.

“So, there’s a Dodgers game this evening,” Eddie says, jiggling his car keys nervously while he waits for Buck to finish changing after their shift. He rests his gaze somewhere to the left of Buck's bare chest. “I was thinking about inviting Tommy over to watch. And I know you’re watching Jee so Chim and Maddie can work on wedding stuff—”

“Eddie,” Buck tugs his shirt over his head and looks at Eddie quizzically. “We’ve already been over this. I was never actually mad that you were hanging out with Tommy without me. I mean yeah, I guess I felt slightly excluded, but it was more about—”

“Yeah, yeah I know, the giant crush you had on the guy,” Eddie says with a fond eye-roll. There. That’s something two-weeks-ago Eddie would’ve said, right?

I just wanna gush bc omg I love the 666 series so much. I think it made me realize I might be... furry-ish? adjacent? I just find it so satisfying how you go into detail about the unique body features of both of them, the way it feels to have deer ears or kiss a TV and just generally how much thought is put into the way their bodies work, and I've realized that my interest in that kind of idea is a pretty good reason to partake in more explicitly furry media lmao. Anyways

I'm also really in love with how you maintain the balance of each of their personality traits. Vox is simultaneously so pathetic and cringefail (also your dialogue for him is perfect, I can hear it crystal clear in my head) but also he has vastly more emotional intelligence than Alastor, no doubt at least in part because he has to deal with Val, and he's able to marginally calm down with his obsession to deal with sticky situations, but even then he still retains his personality and bumbles things sometimes because of the flaws in said personality! It's great. I also really appreciate the balance you've struck with Alastor, I feel like often Alastor is either written to either soften up so immediately that it feels disconnected from his character or is written overly mean and heartless for my liking and the way you've written him is such a delicious balance between softer aspects such as the prey instincts or moments of vulnerability and his untouchable and manipulative self, and also the way this side of him is neither written as wholly a front or wholly his real nature and the complex ways this makes him struggle with his increasing vulnerability. TL;DR arghgr your characterization is so good it makes me go a little feral

Also while I'm here, I'm curious whether you can give an answer to the degree to which Alastor is touch-averse. There's obviously a lot of ways in which he fundamentally dislikes touch but it also seems like there's at least some kinds of touch where he doesn't dislike the touch itself so much as he's afraid of the way it brings about feelings of caring and/or enjoyment being cared for. I'm curious how much, in general, you would say his touch aversion comes from either cause and possibly what kinds of touch do/don't provoke those flavors of aversion

And ahaha - I'm not a furry but I fucking love inhuman characters. Being raised in the pits of Homestuck fantroll RP made me enjoy the whole "they're bug/fish aliens" thing and it definitely rears its head again any time I encounter characters with inhuman qualities. I love writing Vox's TV/computer-ness and Alastor's deer and radio bits, and integrating them into who they now are as people.

As for Alastor's touch-aversion: It's funny that you ask about this, because the next chapter of 666 is going to dive into it a bit. Specifically into the fact that it's not, like, a set of boundaries that is consistently defined, and I write him that way on purpose. The very first time he and Vox sleep together, Alastor bottoms. He becomes significantly less amenable to touch after he goes through an uncomfortable rut cycle that gets sexual. By the time Vox convinces Alastor to fuck him, Alastor would never let Vox do that again and frankly only agrees to topping because Vox gave him an option that didn't involve getting his dick out. Then in the next episode, they're having clothes-off sexual contact. So, what gives?

Things that play into Alastor's willingness to touch and be touched as far as Vox is concerned:

How does he see Vox at that point in time? Disgustingly entitled (ew)? Hilariously beneath him (haha who cares)?

Does he care about what Vox thinks of him? Does Vox touching him draw his attention to positive or negative assumptions he has about Vox's perspective on doing so?

What value has he attached to this particular touch in the power balance of their relationship? Is he humoring Vox? Does he assume Vox thinks he's owed this? Does he perceive it as something Vox is genuinely doing for him?

Has he tried this particular kind of touch before? He's pretty willing to experiment, but that doesn't mean he'll do something twice without a compelling reason if he didn't like it the first time.

Is he getting off on this situation sexually? If so, is it fully willing (read: not a byproduct of uncomfortable hormones) on his part? That only really happens when he's in a submissive role and Vox is hitting a few very specific kinks, a major one of which is basically CNC tilted 30 degrees to the left.

Is he enjoying the touch in platonic ways? How does he feel about that? Is it a vulnerability to want something? Is it feeding his ego to be catered to? Is he worried that what he enjoys platonically is being read into in ways he doesn't like?

Is he fucking drunk? Things that bother you when sober often seem like a non-issue when you're not, both on a physical and emotional level.

How much touching has been happening recently? Has he hit his limit? Did he deliberately put himself into a situation earlier to have his limit be hit and surpassed, and now he's in the aftermath?

He does have a certain fundamental purely physical dislike of touch, but it's something that is really affected by how he perceives each individual situation as well as his relationship with Vox at that time, and his previous experiences!

There's a solid second after he finishes where Dipper doesn't respond, just stares ahead with glassy eyes. Then he finally starts again.*

Temporary... so I'd forget for just... a little while? L-like how Grunkle S-stan's getting his memory back? I... I want to forget. It sounds... n-nice. W-would I end up like Mc-Mcgucket? All crazy and d-delirious? I... I don't k-know...

Amitie Guide

Thought it might be fun to do more of these! So here's the main things you need to know about understanding Amitie:

Amitie is, in a word, spontaneous. When talking with others, she relays things based on what comes to mind, as it comes to mind, instead of attempting to order or structure her thoughts. This results in a lot of rambling, scrambling for words, onomatopoeia, and "Are you pondering what I'm pondering"-esque tangents.

Likewise, she tends to act impulsively and without a lot of planning when left to her own devices. She either goes with her gut reaction, or completely against it, with little in between.

When she has no immediate gut reaction, and therefore has to stop and think, she usually overthinks to a crippling degree, and doesn't trust her conclusions a lot of the time.

Amitie has little confidence in her decision-making skills and is highly anxiety-prone.

Her cheerfulness is her most powerful ability, and her number-one go-to. She'll always put forth optimism and a smile as much as she can, because she knows she's good at giving those vibes.

Amitie enjoys listening to other people talk, but is prone to losing focus, especially if things go in a direction she can't follow.

Topics most likely to lose Amitie: lectures, math/science, philosophy, anything with lots of jargon and technical terms.

Spontaneity + Not always having details down = clumsiness

While she often loses track of details easily, even when not dealing with a complex subject, Amitie is very good at grasping the bottom line of what somebody says.

Whenever I RP Amitie, I find that when in doubt, the best way to figure out where her head is, is to focus on what was most recently said to her and respond directly to that.

Amitie is sensitive to the emotions of others. The longer she knows somebody, the more she comes to understand them-- even when what they say conflicts what they mean.

She really has next to no confidence and self-esteem. Usually, it's hidden behind her smiles, but when put in the spotlight, she genuinely believes herself incapable of accomplishing anything.

She's quick to blame herself whenever something bad happens or something fails and she was even remotely involved. Mistakes and messups hit really close to home for her.

The truth is, Amitie is actually really perceptive and clever. Her self-doubt, and by extension her lack of confidence, are her biggest obstacles.

She tries to avoid saying anything negative about people at all, but it can slip out sometimes when she's not thinking about it (ie, Raffina's "mildly tollerable unpleasantness," or Klug being a jerk).

She's not good at white lies or sugar-coating things. Once that slips out, she can't backpedal very far.

By and large, she generally focuses on the best aspects of everyone that isn't herself.

She's the most likely to say "I'm happy as long as everyone else is happy" and actually mean it. With all the good and bad that comes with that thought.

Amitie is heavily people-oriented and very ride-or-die with everyone she considers to be a friend. She will support you as best she can whether you like it or not.

She gets exciteable and flustered easily when mature or "grown up" subjects like romance come up… even though she doesn't really fully understand what any of it means.

It might be because she gets attached to ideas and images in her mind that she can't explain very well. A key example of this is what being a "wonderful sorceress" means to her. She seems to have a degree of understanding it, but struggled to relay the image to Arle and Ringo.

(She was also disappointed when her friends' first attempts at baking resulted in shenanigans, as another example)

As long as she can focus on someone else, she can rebound immediately. Nothing gets her grounded faster than a chance to help a friend smile.

You know I enjoy tiktok as a place to post stupid memes and silly animatics and me dancing around with my dinosaur mask, but when you actually try to post a genuine take on something, you'll be met with some of the dumbest motherfuckers alive. I remember someone made a post calling out the ableism in WCUE, and how people on that game will tell disabled cats they can't be warriors and it's too unrealistic and shit like that. And I made a response saying how a mentality like that is a result of the books themselves, because the series constantly teaches children that disabled people are incapable of doing the same jobs able bodied people can. That then leads to people in rps and rp games fully believing that the books are right, and thinking it's 'against the rules' or 'unrealistic' for disabled cats to be anything other than medicine cats or elders. I then went on to bring up WoF as an example of a series that doesn't really do that. WoF is def not perfect when it comes to disabled rep, but it handles disabled characters far better than Warriors. Many of the RainWings think Tamarin is weird or incapable of helping in the royal challenge, but you're never supposed to agree with them. She then goes on beat the flower challenge in like record time, proving that she is in fact just as skilled as the other dragons. Whiteout being neurodivergent is something that is absolutely essential to who she is as a person. The second she starts acting "normally," it's not seen as a relief, it's seen as a cause for alarm. Arctic enchanting her condition away isn't treated as a good thing, it's a violation to Whiteout, a horrible thing he does to her. This is largely why you don't see a lot of ableism in WoF games or WoF rps, because the books aren't hammering it into children's skulls that being disabled means you're not as skilled as able bodied people, and you can't do the same tasks as them. You rarely see people saying shit like "disabled dragons can't be soldiers, disabled dragons can't be queens." I'm sure it still happens, but not to the extent of the warrior cats fandom, because WoF has several disabled characters who are shown to be just as capable as everyone else

I then received multiple comments saying "But Tui wrote warriors!! She wrote warrior cats!! She's responsible for all the ableism in warrior cats!!" I'll just let you decide why that's a piss poor response

Bad's character is SO interesting yet so tragic but it's rarely noticed, even by a large majority of the ghosties as it happens.

Bad worked SO hard to help the island from the moment the eggs joined. He's been coming up with ways to protect the eggs, he's got nearly every item possible, has always been happy to equip anyone with what they need and has always been up to babysitting without even being asked because he wanted to make sure all the kids are safe and alive.

Yet during the election arc, people constantly said how Forever did the most for the island because his stuff was the most obvious. Bad's contribution was hardly mentioned at all because they were less obvious to people.

He might have won the islanders vote, but he lost overall by a single vote. In his mind, it doesn't matter, he lost and that's it.

He starts his 'vacation' arc that was a cover for his mental breakdown as he lost his chance to have Skeppy, his main anchor to emotional stability. So he builds statues of Skeppy to help cope. And people treat it as a joke, tell him he's crazy. Cover the Skeppys because it's fun for them. They say he's crazy but laugh it off and never try help.

Baghera tries after seeing how much he's hurting, but he always deflects. Foolish lets him keep his vacation treehouse in his home because he knows Bad isn't doing great. But none of it helps.

He's still expected to babysit the eggs when they've not been taken care of. Expected to happily hand out whatever people ask for. Expected to go into super dangerous dungeons and get little to no recognisation for how well he's done, Etoiles getting called the best fighter on the server and only Etoiles recognising how powerful Bad is.

So he gives up on the 'vacation' as no one is noticing. The vacation was treated as a funny joke so why continue? Then when Forever takes the credit for builds Bad has helped with a lot, it hurts Bad a lot because that's supposed to be one of his closest friends practically refusing to acknowledge his help.

One thing he's slowly starting to realise is that people only see him as 'the babysitter and rich guy' of the island. He's not Bad. He's the helpful guy. We first see him snap when the daycare him, Pomme, Dapper, Richarlyson and Senhora (?) Worked on was blown up without as much as an apology until afterwards. He snaps and goes to blow things up because he's snapped.

He doesn't take it too far, just targetting the person who deserves it. But it's a sign he's getting close to snapping.

Bad wants Forever, one of his closest friends on the island, to just say thank you for helping. He can't ask as that takes every ounce of meaning out of the words, he can subtly hint at that's what he wants, but if he outrightly says it, then it means nothing.

The thank you isn't just a "I want you to appreciate what I did for you" thing, it's a "We're friends, right? You care about what I've done to help you right? So you care about me right?" To Bad. It means much more than just thank you to him.

But he can't just ask like Pomme said. It means nothing when asked for. So he has to try get him to say it without directly saying he wants it.

Bad's getting closer to the end of his sanity and nothing is helping. Few people are trying to help because he tries to play it off as a joke, the ones who do try don't know how. He wants two small words from someone, but he's told he's wrong. That he should just talk to Forever because it's not that big of a deal.

Bad's problems are being constantly dismissed by people on the island because he treats it so much like a joke no one thinks about it being any deeper than a joke because they expect him to tell them. When that's now how he is. He's never been truly open about any emotions and he isn't going to suddenly start because people aren't noticing his subtle hints at not being okay.

What are some of your Hoshino Ai headcanons?

I had a very silly one for quite a while ever since the DVDs were brought into the story and that is when Ai recorded them, there were times she had to stop what she was saying and walk out of frame after hearing baby Ruby crying or something like that. Just having the twins interrupt her and just turning into a wholesome, funny thing for Ai.

GOD I HAVE SO MANY AI HEADCANONS I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHERE TO START… I'm constantly playing Blobo TV with her in my brain both for RP/fanfic purposes and also just for when I'm bored at work lol so I have so many in my head… So I'll rapidfire a bunch off the top of my head!

Ai can't cook! Most of her meals are premade stuff or like, bentos bought from supermarkets, etc. She was never taught literally Anything about cooking when she was younger so she has zero instinct or starting knowledge or lbr even time to try and learn, but she commits to at least trying once Aqua and Ruby are born. She is absolutely not good at it even when she really gets her nose to the grindstone but eventually becomes passable. Ironically, she's actually better at baking then cooking, because baking recipes are WAY more precise and exact and she has an easier time when she has a set of Very Exact Step By Step Instructions to follow.

On a food note, she has really bad spice tolerance…!!! Anything hotter than like, the medium spicy Golden Curry range is so far out of her strike zone it isn't even funny. Ruby is the same (a hold over from eating mostly bland food as Sarina) but Aqua really likes spicy stuff and his tolerance is really good as a result. Unfortunately, he also doesn't really realize just how high his tolerance is - it was way worse as Gorou so he keeps underestimating how hot things are. So anytime Ai is like "hey Aqua how spicy is this" he's like "oh it's not too bad" and then Ai takes a bite and dies and it takes years before they manage to figure out the differences in their tolerance LOL

She's a little clumsy…! It's a side of her people rarely see because she's so graceful and careful as an idol, but the #1 way to tell she's comfortable with someone is that they're allowed to see her being a bit of a failgirl.

I mentioned this in another ask but I like to think she gets back into video games on her hiatus… not super deep, but she grabs a cheap secondhand GBA SP and one of those carts that's like 20 puzzle games in one or something and keeps playing it even after she goes off hiatus. Since she's so busy, it's easier for her to get into things like Tetris where your play sessions don't have to be that long and there's no story to follow… anything like an RPG would be no good. Eventually one year, Aqua and Ruby pool some money and get her a jailbroken DS or something for her birthday and even though she has a bajillion games on it, she mostly still just plays Tetris………..

She really wants to be a plant mom but her schedule means that she inevitably gets so busy she forgets to water them and they end up dying and she's depresso every time…

Appearance wise, between the twins, Aqua is actually the one who looks most like her - Ruby definitely does too but grows more into her own features as she grows up, whereas Aqua still really strongly resembles Ai even once he's all grown up.

She has a ton of those influencer ass hyperspecific trendy gadgets and appliances around the house, not because she buys them but because companies keep sending them to her in hopes of getting her to promote them and she never does LOL. If she actually gets a sponsorship deal through work then she'll do it, but even then it's mostly her just hyping something up and saying she uses it every single day when 90% of the time they just end up rotting at the bottom of her drawer. Pretty much the only thing she ends up regularly using is like, toiletries and hair care products and that's just because it saves her having to shop for them but she has absolutely zero brand loyalty.

As an adult, she copies a lot of her fashion sense from Miyako! Her style leans more girly and fresh than Miyako's does but Ai doesn't really care about clothes so she never developed a sense of fashion growing up. But she knows Miyako is a pretty stylish person and looks up to her as someone to emulate fashion from. Of course, when she's incognito or chilling at home, she still always prefers her comfy hoodies and sweaters and plain, loose clothes.

Ai likes Kana a lot! This was technically canonized in the Da Vinci interview and I felt so smug when I saw it lol. But I've always thought Ai would like Kana - she sort of vicariously enjoys her cheekiness and confidence and admires her drive and her passion and craft at such a young age. When Kana joins B-Komachi, Ai sort of recognises how much of her fire has gone out and its immediately like free daughter??? Free daughter for Hoshino Ai???? She and Mem also get along really well but because they're closer in age, the dynamic is more friendly coworkers whereas she and Kana have a more senpai/kouhai surrogate mom figure thing going on.

Aaaand finally… If Ai had ever found out about Aqua and Ruby's past lives, she would have loved and accepted them all the same. If anything, knowing just how terribly alone and starved of care they both were would have encouraged her to make sure they felt loved, safe and accepted as her kids. After all, Ai, too, is a "motherless child" as Tsukuyomi describes the twins - she'd absolutely understand.
